Description
Originating from a very old tree in the Manawatu; Malus domestica Monty’s Surprise is a remarkable, disease hardy New Zealand-bred apple known for its exceptionally high levels of antioxidants and natural disease resistance ( research carried out by Mark Christensen from N Z Tree Crops Association).
The large fruit has green skin with a red blush and crisp, juicy flesh with a well-balanced sweet-tart flavour. Ripening in mid- to late Autumn, it’s excellent for fresh eating, juicing, and long-term storage. Well known for its potential health benefits.
Ideal for home orchards, permaculture plantings, and health-focused edible gardens, especially where minimal spraying is preferred.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Partially self-fertile, but benefits from cross-pollination with varieties such as Liberty or Granny Smith for improved yields.
Mature size: Vigorous and upright, typically growing 4–5 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree
